The fee cap is not your income ceiling

This is the single most misunderstood point in the profession. The statutory cap applies to the notarial act. It does not cap what you charge to drive to a hospital at 9pm, to wait while a family gathers, to print and prepare a loan package, or to handle an apostille file through three offices.

In most states, travel and convenience fees are separate and are set by you, subject to disclosure requirements. That is why one Louisiana notary earns $15 an hour and another earns several times that with the same commission. Where the work is in Louisiana

New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Lafayette carry the densest signing volume in Louisiana, but density is not the same as opportunity. Metro markets have more loan signings and far more notaries competing for them. Smaller Louisiana markets often have almost no one offering apostille services, remote online notarization or document preparation — which means less volume but far less competition and much better margins.
